Workshop: The Novel Art of Translating a Novel with John McGlynn

Join Indonesian author, Leila S. Chudori, and translator, John H. McGlynn, in a discussion and workshop on the intricacy and artistry required in translating her latest novel, Laut Bercerita (The Sea Speaks His Name).
Registered participants must be fluent in both Bahasa Indonesia/Bahasa Malaysia and English and, ideally, have some previous experience in translating literary texts.
This workshop is limited to 20 participants.
Following registration, participants will be sent a short but different section of the novel to translate. Translated texts are to be submitted to GTLF two weeks prior to the workshop.

John H. McGlynn lives in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he co-founded and serves as director of publications for the Lontar Foundation, the only organisation in the world devoted to the promotion of Indonesia through the translation of literary texts. Through Lontar, he has ushered into print more than 200 books on Indonesian literature and culture. As the translator of several dozen publications himself, he has garnered much international praise for his work. He is a contributing editor to several literary journals, including Manoa and Words without Borders. He is also head of the Literary and Translation Funding Programmes of Indonesia’s National Book Committee.
